This time of year, I hear from a lot of high-performing women (and men) who are done.
Theyโ€™re overbooked, overcommitted, and over it. They feel guilty for not doing more โ€” even when theyโ€™re already doing everything. They came back from a break still tired and now feel worse for the time away from family. Theyโ€™re respected, relied on, praisedโ€ฆ and quietly drowning.

And when we talk about โ€œso what now?โ€ the answer is often: โ€œMaybe I need to leave.โ€ But hereโ€™s the thing โ€”

You donโ€™t always need a new job. You need a boundary.
Sometimes more than one.

When top performers are saying, โ€œBurnout is real,โ€ something needs to shift. When back-to-back days leave no time to actually ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฐ the work โ€” and family time becomes catch-up time โ€” change is needed. And when thatโ€™s your normal for long enough, it makes sense that youโ€™d start looking for the door.

But hereโ€™s the uncomfortable truth:
Because the problem isnโ€™t always the company โ€” itโ€™s how youโ€™ve been taught (or expected) to show up: always available, always responsive, always proving.

I used this quote in another post, and Iโ€™ll use it again here โ€” itโ€™s just as valid:
โ€ โ€” James Clear
Boundaries are a foundation of our systems.

Theyโ€™re not just about protecting your time โ€” theyโ€™re about protecting your energy, your thinking space, and your leadership capacity. And yes โ€” they only work if the people around you respect them.
So this isnโ€™t just a personal reflection. Itโ€™s also a company one.
Are you working in a place โ€” and for a person โ€” that respects the word ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ? That doesnโ€™t reward burnout? That doesnโ€™t treat busyness like a badge?

If not, thatโ€™s a different conversation. But if the role fits โ€” and the culture could support it โ€” donโ€™t assume your only option is to leave.

Prioritise yourself. Set one boundary. Do what you can to hold it. See what happens.
You might be surprised how much more manageable work becomes when youโ€™re not running it on empty.

Before you update your CV, ask yourself:
